What is an Ice Bath?

An ice bath, or cold plung, is a large tub or bath filled with very cold water.

Submerging yourself in this water for therapeutic benefits is know as cold water immersion, or cold water therapy.  It is a recovery technique where an individual submerges their body in the water, typically at temperatures between 4°C to 15°C, for a short duration of time.

This practice is used around the world for it’s spiritual and physical health benifits. Cold water immersion is also widely used by athletes and fitness enthusiasts to reduce muscle soreness, accelerate recovery, and enhance overall well-being.

The cold water triggers various physiological responses in the body, such as reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and even boosting mental clarity, making it a popular method for both physical and mental rejuvenation.

What does an ice bath session look like?

You arrive at SOUL Wellness Hub, and will be greeted at the front desk, You will sign a couple fo forms cheking you are safe to use the cold plunge. You will be shown to the cold plunge where a trained member of staff will guide you through the session. The session can last from anywhere between one to fifteen minuites.

How long does a session last?

Usually between three and ten minutes is recommended however you may stay in for as short a period as you feel comfortable, it is wise to build your self up over time starting with shorter times in the tub. You can stay in for a maximum of fifteen minutes per session.

What is the science around ice baths?

The health benefits of ice baths are supported by a growing body of scientific research.

When you immerse your body in cold water, vasoconstriction occurs, which helps reduce inflammation and swelling in tissues by limiting blood flow to the affected areas. Once you exit the ice bath, the reintroduction of blood flow, or vasodilation, helps flush out metabolic waste and delivers oxygen-rich blood to muscles, accelerating recovery.

Additionally, cold exposure triggers the release of norepinephrine, a hormone that not only enhances mood and mental clarity but also reduces inflammation on a systemic level.

Studies have also shown that cold therapy can activate brown adipose tissue, leading to increased calorie burning and improved metabolic health. These physiological responses provide a strong scientific basis for the use of ice baths as a recovery and wellness tool.
